Activision brought back a fan favorite in video game character this summer, Crash Bandicoot. The game, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, was released on June 30rd exclusively for Playstation. The game received great reviews and became a surprise hit for Activision. The game claimed the top spot in the weekly sale chart in the U.K. and posted the best single-format debut of 2017. It topped games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Horizon: Zero Dawn. It also became the second best overall debut of 2017. This is only in U.K., but it’s clearly a good sign. If the sales of other regions are similar to the U.K., then the game will be a nice surprise to Q2 earning.
Activision also updated us last week on the progress of their Overwatch league. They finally announced the first seven team owners for the league. The league, which is set to begin later this year, will be the first league with city based teams. Boston based team will be owned by New England Patriots owner, Robert Kraft. New York based team will be owned by the Mets COO Jeff Wilpon. LA and San Francisco based teams will be owned by Immortals and NRG Esports respectively. The two professional E-sports team paid 20 million each for the spot. Seoul, South Korea based team will be owned by Kevin Chou, co-founder of Kabam Inc. Beijing, China based team will be owned by NetEase Inc., a pc and mobile game developer. Lastly, Miami based team will be owned by Misfit Gaming, another professional E-sports team.
They are still in discussion with other interested parties. This is great news for the Overwatch league as ATVI is working on it to become a league like professional sports and become a worldwide hit. I am still bullish on ATVI long term. If the league can become successful like professional sports league, then this will launch ATVI to a new height. It is a high risk and high reward with this league, but I like their chances as Overwatch is one of the fastest growing games out there.
DISCLAIMER: I currently have a long position in ATVI. I believe that ATVI has great growth potential. Please do your own research before making any decisions. Don’t make decisions based solely on the information provided here.
